There is nothing classier, sexier and more elegant than a fantastic low arrangement on a dining room table. It’s simple to make and the low height makes it easy to talk across over dinner—meaning your beautiful flowers can remain on the table while you eat. We met up with LA Premier, one of Los Angeles’ most fabulous florists, to find out how to go about making a stunning low arrangement.
Firstly, you will need floral oasis, which is available at most florists or flower markets. Secondly, three different types of flowers—one green leaf base, a larger filler flower, and a statement flower. LA Premier used Scented Geranium as the green base, white hydrangeas as a filler flower, and beautiful lavender roses to finish. This tutorial will help you create a beautiful low arrangement for your next soirée.
– Start with a long, low rectangular or diamond shaped vase.
– Soak the oasis for at least 5 minutes until it is completely drenched in water. Add flower-food to the water it soaks in, to make your flowers last longer.
– Cut your oasis to fit exactly inside your vase. After you try it out, remove the oasis and put to the side.
(The next steps are for a glass or see-through vase only)
– If your vase is opaque, you can simply add the oasis to the vase and continue from there. However, if your vase is see-through, you need to make sure the oasis is hidden behind a layer of leaves. We suggest using Aspidistra leaves (pictured here) or Ti leaves. Lay the wide, flat leaves overlapping each other on top of the vase.
(These next steps are for all vases)
– Tape down the oasis so it does not move and tape around the edge of the vase so that everything is secure.
For the Greens:
– Start with a bunch of greens as filler. We suggest Scented Geranium Leaf (pictured here), Lemon Leaf or Camellia Leaf.
– Cut the heads off the greens with a 2-inch stem.
– Insert the leaves into the oasis starting at one end and ending in the middle of the vase.
– To add movement to the arrangement, arrange the leaves in an ‘S’ shape.
– Add about half the amount of leaves to the opposite corner of the arrangement.
For the filler flowers:
– Use a larger, fluffier flower such as hydrangeas (pictured here), wax flowers, mums or peonies.
– Fill the rest of the empty space with the large flowers, so that no oasis is showing.
For the statement flowers:
– Choose a beautiful, statement flower such as a rose (pictured here) to be the focal feature of your arrangement.
– Cut the roses so that the stems are about 1 inch longer that those of the hydrangeas (about 3 inches). This way, the roses will sit a bit higher in the arrangement, to make a statement.
– Take half of the roses and carefully bend the petals of each flower back, to open the roses and make them larger.
– Start by adding a line of the closed roses to the oasis touching the ‘S’ line of the greens and mimicking its pattern.
– Sporadically, all over the arrangement, create clusters of roses with both the opened roses and un-opened roses next to each other.
– Continue adding the roses until the entire arrangement is peppered with roses.
Water your arrangement every day. Put one finger inside the arrangement, so you can feel how much water the oasis is absorbing and so it doesn’t overflow.
Your arrangement should last about a week.
