Fighting Dry Skin From Within

If you’ve ever spent way too much money on the latest lotions, potions, and masks (oh my!) to cure your skin of dryness, you know that while these may help the problem, they usually won’t clear it up all together. A one-two-punch approach for dry skin is the way to go. Fight it on the outside with a great moisturizer, and from the inside with what you eat!

Having dry skin can lead to many skin issues – even breakouts! When skin is overly dry (from using a harsh soap, etc.), it can produce too much oil, causing your skin to break out – who knew?! Usually, we associate breakouts with oily skin and steer clear of moisturizers, but if you do this, you may actually be undermining your skin’s ability to repair itself and banish blemishes. So, what’s a girl to do? Continue with a quality moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher, and then flood your body with some of these delicious moisture-infused foods and you’ll see your skin glow in no time!

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s)

Have you ever seen someone you know avoids eating fat at all costs (c’mon, think about it, everyone knows one of THEM)? I’m going to venture to guess that their hair looks dull and broken, and their skin looks sallow and lined. There’s a reason Essential Fatty Acids are called ESSENTIAL – they are completely necessary for making sure our skin is plumped and moisturized. Our bodies cannot create these oils on their own so it’s crucial that we include them in our diet. Foods like oily fish (sardines, tuna, salmon), nuts and seeds (flaxseed oil, walnuts, almonds), eggs, and prawns are all excellent sources of healthy fats for your body. Keep the “everything in moderation” rule in mind, and also reduce your intake of saturated and processed fats (these can cancel out the beneficial effects of Essential Fatty Acids) and you’ll be glowing! 


If you love a little something sweet, but know that you shouldn’t be indulging in a candy bar or gummy bears, then this glow-get-em food group is for you! Antioxidants are incredibly important in the process of destroying “free radicals” (electrochemically unbalanced molecules that are generated within our bodies by things like stress, too much sun, and chemicals). These free radicals make our skin look less than pretty because they damage collagen – and collagen is essential in keeping skin looking plump, moisturized, and elastic! So, next time your sweet tooth hits, indulge in berries (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries), grapes, cherries, or papaya. Not only will your taste buds be doing a victory dance, but your skin will too! These additional foods are also high in antioxidants: peppers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, chestnuts, carrots, Brazil nuts, broccoli, and hazelnuts. Hmmm…fighting dry skin from within is most definitely tastier than applying a moisturizer every day…

(Eat your) Vitamins

You could be boring and swallow dry vitamins with a glass of water – or you could EAT your vitamins! Vitamins like A, E, C, and B-Complex are essential in keeping our skin looking supple.

Vitamin A helps out in forming new skin cells and can be found in eggs, oily fish, liver, whole milk and butter. Vitamin E is an antioxidant (discussed above) and fights free radical damage. Foods like vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, whole grains, sweet potatoes and avocado are excellent (and delicious) ways to make sure you’re getting your fill. Vitamin B-Complex aids in keeping skin smooth and moisturized – find it in foods like milk, poultry, peanut butter, bananas, whole grains, eggs, and red meat. And finally, good old Vitamin C is essential in producing collagen (the elastic tissue that declines when we age). Ensure your collagen levels are as high as possible by eating foods like apples, peppers, potatoes, strawberries, oranges, tomatoes and kiwi fruit. Eating your vitamins is most definitely tastier than swallowing your vitamins!

Eating the foods we’ve included in our lists and saturating your body with water (in any form – cucumbers, coconut water, or a plain bottle of the clear stuff) will get your skin glowing in a way that no top of the line moisturizer could possibly do on it’s own.
